How to Care for Your Leather Bag

Home / Caring for your purchase

Everyday Leather Cleaning

A little dust? A soft, dry cloth does the trick. For light surface marks, lightly dampen the cloth with water and gently wipe the whole panel, seam to seam. Go easy: barely damp is plenty.

Give the whole panel a little love. Cleaning just one spot can leave a water ring.

For stubborn spots, call in a little backup. Look for a professional who specializes in cleaning leather handbags. Some shoe repair shops and dry cleaners offer this service, too. Just ask before dropping off your bag.

Worth knowing before it happens

Spills, and the one thing
to know about our bags

Our bags are intentionally unlined, so you can enjoy the natural texture and beauty of full-grain leather inside and out. It also means oils from food, hand cream, and makeup can soak through and leave a mark on the outside if spilled inside.

When lip gloss or hand cream come along for your day, a pouch can be a smart little safeguard.

Liquid Spills

For spills, blot with a clean, dry cloth and air-dry away from heat and sunlight. No rubbing, please.

Oily Spills

For oily spills inside your bag, try a little cornstarch on the suede side of the interior after testing a hidden spot. Leave it overnight, then gently brush off. It may lighten the stain, but stubborn marks are best left to a leather specialist.

A note on denim

Worth knowing: dark denim can transfer dye onto lighter fabrics and leather. Crossbody bags can pick up color as they rub against your jeans throughout the day. Keep that in mind when pairing your favorite denim with Saddle or our other lighter shades.

Conditioning Your Leather Bag

A little goes a long way. Check in once or twice a year, and condition only when the leather feels dry. Too much can darken the color or leave the surface greasy, so go easy.

How to Store Your Leather Bag

Stuff it lightly with clean tissue paper or a soft cloth, then tuck it into its dust bag somewhere cool and dry. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade the leather. A cotton pillowcase makes a good stand-in if the dust bag has wandered off.

If it needs a little reshaping after a season off, carrying it again will help the leather relax. Start using it and give it a little time to settle back in.

What not to use

Scratches and Surface Scuffs

No need to fuss over every little scratch. Our leather is dyed all the way through, so light marks tend to blend in with time and use. A gentle rub with a clean fingertip can help soften a small surface scuff. Go easy and give it time to settle in.
